BRUSSELS, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- The European Commission's statistical office confirmed Wednesday that the eurozone economy grew in the second quarter.
The economy in the eurozone rose 0.3 percent in the quarter, Eurostat said, confirming a figure released in mid-August. But Eurostat, the European Commission's statistics agency, said the economy in the larger, 28-member European Union grew 0.4 percent April through June, a slight increase from the previous estimate.
Although the economies rose from the first quarter, the gross domestic product for the eurozone is down 0.5 percent from the second quarter of 2012 and flat over the same period in the EU, which became a 28-member federation with the addition of Croatia in July.
Eurostat said Denmark's second quarter GDP rose 0.5 percent from the first quarter and from the second quarter of 2012. Denmark was not included in the previous estimate.
The GDP for Greece, also not listed in mid-August, fell 4.6 percent compared to the same quarter of 2012. In Slovenia, the economy slipped 0.3 percent from the first quarter and 2.2 percent from the second quarter of 2012. Data for Luxembourg and Malta are still unavailable.
